Construction Code

The Grand Traverse County COVID-19 policy continues to restrict public access to the interior of our building so the office is closed to in person transactions until authorized by the county administrator.  Contractor’s/homeowners wishing to submit applications and supporting documents are still encouraged to do so by email, sending them to or by mail.  Those needing to drop off or pick up documents can do so using the departments external (unsecured) drop box located at the main entrance of the Public Service Building.  The drop box will be available Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM only. Construction Code staff will be following the Governor’s order and taking precautionary measures to protect staff and the public through the use of ppe equipment and social distancing; it is expected that those on site will use the same precautionary measures.

Once construction activity resumes (May 7, 2020), inspection staff will be reviewing all inspection requests received during the temporary closure and completing them as quickly as possible with available staff.  There may be delays in the performance until staff has caught up on those requests already received.  Construction sites must adhere to the requirements of Executive Order 2020-70 at all times inspections are being performed.  Your patience in the coming weeks will be appreciated as staff make necessary adjustments to some department procedures for the protection of staff and the general public.

The Grand Traverse County Building Department is responsible for protecting the health, safety and welfare of the people who visit and live in Grand Traverse County by regulating the construction of our built environment to ensure compliance with construction codes, ordinances and related rules and regulations.
